White edges towards TV stages of UK
JIMMY White is just two wins away from qualifying for this month's BBC-televised Maplin UK Championship after another dramatic final frame victory in Sheffield.
The Whirlwind fought back from 4-2 and 7-6 down to beat Welshman Ian Preece 9-8 in the second round of qualifying at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield yesterday.
It was the second time this week the crowd favourite fought back from behind to claim a 9-8 win following his first round victory over Yorkshireman David Grace.
And with victory White, down to No 65 in the world rankings, will now lock horns with Wellingborough qualifier Rory McLeod on Friday and Saturday for a place in the final phase of qualifying on Sunday and Monday.
The winner of that best-of-17 frame contest will play Stoke's Dave Harold, this season's Northern Ireland Trophy finalist, in the final qualifying round. Sheffield-based Chinese cueman Liu Hang saw his UK qualifying hopes ended 9-7 by Dubliner Joe Delaney yesterday.
