Swift hoping for improved finish
BEN Swift has a lot of ground to make up after a tough opening day in the men’s omnium at the UCI World Cup in London.
Swift is just inside the top ten after the first three of six races in cycling’s answer to the decathlon but his more favoured events are still to come so he will hope to move up the leaderboard today.
The omnium is not Swift’s first choice event as he continues to fight for a place in the men’s team pursuit squad for London 2012 and he views a good result today as merely a bonus. After qualifying with ease Swift came 11th in the flying lap after posting a time of 13.591 secs with Canada’s Zach Bell leading the way in 13.295 secs.
He followed this result with 13th place in the points race which saw competitors complete 120 laps including 12 sprints. The last event of the day was the elimination race which saw Swift stay out of trouble until the concluding laps, finishing third.
