SPEEDWAY: American Wells could end up back on track

SHEFFIELD are still hoping to finalise a new deal for American World Cup star Ricky Wells.

Wells is currently back in his home country and will feature in the Monster Energy World Challenge later this month.

Elite League Wolverhampton want him to return to Monmore Green and have opened talks with his parent club Coventry about making him a club asset.

But Tigers chief David Hoggart is also hoping Wells will return to Owlerton under the doubling-up rule.

He said: “Ricky made good progress in the second half of the season once he had settled in at Owlerton. It was a difficult start for him because he hasn’t been used to riding a big track every week and we stood by him.

“But he showed for Wolves in the Elite League what he can do and I personally feel he’s a good rider to have in our side next season.

“Ricky wants to come and we are doing all we can to ensure the deal happens. We’re talking to him just as Wolverhampton are and we’d like to think everything will fall into place in the not too distant future. He was criticised a lot by supporters in the early stages of the season but he understood that and just kept his head down and tried to put it right.

“Nobody likes criticism and I had to take him to one side and have a proper chat with him at one stage because it might have got to him, but he’s a brave lad and you have to give him credit the way he battled through.

“I feel he won those critics over by the end of the season and hopefully he can hit the ground running at the start of the 2013 campaign.”
