SNOOKER great Steve Davis is relieved crowd favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan has declared his intention to defend his World Championship title in Sheffield and stressed: “He would have regretted had he opted not play.”

At a press conference in London yesterday, O’Sullivan, nicknamed ‘The Rocket’, confirmed he will take part in the tournament at the Crucible, which begins on April 20.

In November, the 37-year-old said he would not compete for the rest of the 2012-13 season because of “personal issues”. But O’Sullivan, who has battled depression in recent years, will make a much-anticipated return on the sport’s biggest stage.

Davis, a winner of six world crowns, told The Star: “Ronnie would have looked back on his career and would have regretted it in the end if he had opted not to play.

“There was one year where I dropped out of an event in Ireland because it was relatively close to the World Championship. I look back on that now and think ‘I might as well have played in it because I would have enjoyed it.’

“It is nice to see Ronnie has decided he will be a happier person with snooker than without it.

“We all knew he was getting itchy feet and he wanted to comeback and play.”
