Shaun wants second taste of world snooker glory

SHAUN Murphy is determined to make sure he ends his best season to date with the biggest prize of all - the 888.com World Championship title.

The Rotherham potter famously won the Crucible crown in 2005 as a 150-1 outsider at the start of the 17-day tournament.

Now provisionally ranked No 1 in the world, the adopted South Yorkshireman has established himself as one of the sport's leading players.

But even he has to pinch himself sometimes that his amazing victory over Welshman Matthew Stevens came three years ago in Sheffield.

"So much has happened in three years it seems funny to think we've squeezed everything in that time," reflected Murphy.

"But in another way it only seems like yesterday that I won it. I'd love to do well again at Sheffield I'd love to win the title again, simply to experience the feelings of it again because much of it blurred into one when I won it back in 2005.

"I've forgotten what it feels like to win that tournament. In the minutes and hours that passed after winning it, that was all new to me.

Can Shaun Murphy win the title again? Post your comment below.

"I wasn't sure whether I should have a drink and let me hair down or whether I was still working.

"This time I'd do it differently and have a much better time and have a much better go of it. I'd love to have that opportunity again.

"I was very keen to be the best world champion I could be and, to be honest, I thought I did my job very well. I'd do that job again because I feel it's important to be a good ambassador for the sport."

If Murphy does win this season's title, which would be his third ranking title of his career, the 25-year-old would join an elite band of fellow professionals to have won the trophy on two or more occasions.

"It would be good to have another go it," added Murphy. "As far as snooker history is concerned there's a big difference between those players that have won it once and those that have won it more than once.

"It would be nice to join that elite group who have won it more than once."
