Sheffield Eagles are expected to announce the signing of an experienced player from one of their main Championship rivals today.

The club is believed to be close to bringing in Kyle Briggs from Featherstone Rovers, possibly on a loan deal.

It would give coach Mark Aston an experienced option at half-back as the defending Championship title holders seek to revive their season.

The stand-off, who had a spell at Bradford Bulls in the Super League, has been out of favour at Rovers.

The arrival of new coach Andy Hay has seen half-backs brought in and Briggs has spent the last month on loan at Dewsbury Rams.

Meanwhile Aston has revealed that he used a ‘softly-softly’ approach at half-time when the team fell 26-6 behind at Leigh.

It produced a come back with the Championship leaders preserving their unbeaten record with a try in the final seconds for a 32-24 win.

“I couldn’t have had a go at the players because their attitude in the first half was outstanding,” said Aston. “I felt we could still win the game and I told the lads that at half-time. Well we nearly did win it.

“In the second half not to allow Leigh to score for 39 minutes was outstanding. They only scored on the last play after a couple of back-to-back penalties took them from their line to our line.”

Eagles had to settle for a losing bonus point and with Whitehaven winning they drop out of the top eight play-off places. That puts pressure on for a home win over North Wales Crusaders at the weekend.
