Eagles swoop for promising pair to add depth at centre

SHEFFIELD Eagles’ boss Mark Aston believes he has signed two of the best young players in the Championship.

Aston swooped to bring Scott Turner from Dewsbury Rams and Duane Straugheir from York City Knights on two-year deals.

Both have had spells at Super League clubs and have gone on to prove they can cope with the very different demands of playing in the Championship.

Aston said: “We always look for lads who are coming out of the Super League.

“In the past we’ve found that the first season after they come out of the Super League can be difficult for lads to adapt. Duane and Scott have both proved themselves in the Championship, have that experience behind them and will add a lot to the squad.”

Both players have played much of their rugby in the centres – an area where the Eagles struggled for cover last season. Utility back Turner, 23, has had two seasons at the Rams - scoring eight tries last season - after coming through the Castleford Tigers Academy.

Aston said: “Scott’s a rangy strong runner. The type of young player we want and we feel we can develop. He can play wing, centre or full back.”

Straugheir’s signing raises the prospect of a link up with winger Vinny Finigan who he played with for the Bradford Bulls reserves.

“Duane’s a strong lad who can play in the centres or the back row,” said Aston.
