Olympics loom large for six track star Ben

Ben Swift is playing catch up in his bid to fulfil his Olympic dream in London.

The 24-year-old from Rotherham anticipates this year, culminating in the London Olympics, will be his last on the boards of the velodrome, but he has been left out of the team pursuit squad for the Track World Cup.

Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Peter Kennaugh and Steven Burke are set to take to the track in qualifying on today’s opening night of racing at the Olympic Velodrome, with Swift a reserve for the four kilometre team pursuit. Swift, set to ride the six-event omnium this week, is determined to make the most of his remaining track time after a whirlwind few months since making his Tour de France debut last July. Swift said: “It’s gone so fast, it’s been unbelievable. It’s going to be the Olympics before we know it; I’m just trying to get there now. I’m full gas for the team pursuit. That’s the only thing that’s on my radar. My road season’s been tailored around it. I don’t see myself being on the track too much after the Olympics. This is my shot to go for it on the track and my best chance of winning gold in London.”
