SHEFFIELD’S Alastair Wilson says Great Britain hockey team are full of confidence ahead of today’s semi-final match with the Netherlands.
Wilson and fellow South Yorkshire player Barry Middleton, from Doncaster, have given themselves a chance of playing for a medal after negotiating their group with victories against Argentina and Pakistan and draws with South Africa, Australia and Spain.
They have to get past a Dutch team that won all five of their group games, but Wilson, aged 28, a former Meadowhead school and Sheffield College student, insists they can do it.
He said: “We’ve played Holland a lot, they’re a really good team like everyone at this stage. We have a lot of confidence. There’s things we’ve done well and things we haven’t. We feel it’s about us. We need to do what we do well and that will take us a long way.
“We don’t worry about who we’re playing.”
Wilson said watching Team GB’s gold rush has boosted every athlete.
We’ve been inspired by all the sports, team sports and individual ones with everyone doing well. He said: “People go on about the ‘One Team’ thing but it really does feel like that in the village, everyone is supporting each other and asking how they’re going on.”
