Nick travels world in the hope it helps him back home

Nick Robinson-Baker has set his sights on Olympic success and is willing to rack up the air miles to achieve it, writes Ricky Charlesworth.

The City of Sheffield diver’s schedule sees him take in Dubai, Mexico and China in the six months leading up to the Games. The 24-year-old said: “This could be my last Olympics and obviously with it being in London, it makes it extra special.

“The season is going to be hectic and training is intense, but I intend to make the most of it.”

London-born Robinson-Baker, who has lived in Sheffield for eight years, travelled to Australia for a pre-Christmas three-week training camp along with other Team GB divers.

He said: “We had a really good training camp. Me and my partner Chris Mears are both confident ahead of this year.”

Among the techniques practiced by the duo was the front four-and-a-half somersault, one of the most dangerous disciplines in the sport and Nick is under no illusions that he and Mears are taking a risk in practicing such a dive.

He added: “If we’re honest, we need this dive to win an Olympic medal so if we use it and mess it up, it’s could be a huge gamble but hopefully one that pays off.”
