Murphy thinks the World of tour

ROTHERHAM snooker star Shaun Murphy is giving his all-out backing to the new World Series Tour.

The former world champion suffered disappointment as he failed to fire at the tour's debut event in Jersey.

But he insisted: "We've been asking for more tournaments for years and now they're here. We're not here to mess about. We're all taking it seriously."

Murphy beat Guernsey's Martin Deserques 4-1 in their quarter-final clash, but then slipped to an agonising 5-2 defeat to twice Crucible champion John Higgins in this year's showcase finals.

"It's disappointing to lose but I never really got into my stride," he reflected.

"But I've really enjoyed coming to Jersey. I do a lot of things now off the table, with exhibitions and a lot of corporate work, so I've been very busy.

"I managed to squeeze in a little holiday but it's been nice to be playing. We've been saying for a long time that we want more tournaments and now we've got them. It's great.

"It's been fantastic. The players have tried their hardest on and off the table to make it a success.

"Although there weren't any ranking points at stake, we all still tried our best."

World number three Murphy has just returned from the Jiangsu Classic, an invitation event in China, and will be competing in the next World Series event in Berlin next month.

Higgins went on to win the title with an impressive 6-3 victory over Masters and Welsh Open champion Mark Selby.
