Murphy's in the frame for China trophy
FORMER Rotherham potter Shaun Murphy returns to competitive action today at the Jiangsu Snooker Classic in China.
The 2005 world champion joins Sheffield-based Chinese cuemen Ding Junhui, Jin Long and Li Hang, all of whom practise at the English Institute of Sport in the city., at the Wuxi-based tournament
Murphy won the Maplin UK Championship last season and the Killarney World Series of Snooker this season, so it's a chance for the world No 3 to get his hands on more silverware.
"I'm really looking forward to the challenge," said Murphy. "Snooker has a massive following in China and the players are always well received.
"I had a good season, winning the UK final and getting to the Crucible world final.
"Although this is a much smaller tournament, it's the chance to win another trophy."
Other stars names competing in China include seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry, 2002 Crucible winner Peter Ebdon and Mark Allen, Ryan Day, Joe Perry, Ali Carter, Marco Fu and Mark Selby.
All the players will play a series of group matches at the invitational tournament, which concludes on June 7.
The top two finishers in two qualifying groups will proceed to the semi-finals, with a best- of-11-frames final due to be played on Sunday.
Murphy faces Long, Fu, Perry, Selby and Carter in his group matches, while Ding plays Hang, Hendry, Allen, Ebdon and Day.
