Murphy out of pocket as Premier League bid fails

ROTHERHAM potter Shaun Murphy suffered disappointment yesterday after his bid to qualify for next season's Premier League ended at the first hurdle.

The new Maplin UK champion and former world champ needed to impress on the second and final day of the Championship League qualifying at the Crondon Park Golf Club in Essex.

But having made a positive start with a 3-1 win over Welshman Ryan Day the world No 3 was whitewashed 4-0 by Cambridgeshire cueman Joe Perry in his next match. A 2-2 draw with former Masters and current Welsh Open champion Mark Selby in his last qualifying match was not enough to see him progress.

Murphy finished second from bottom in the seven-man qualifying group with only the top five players progressing to the next phase of the competition.

Sheffield-based Chinese cueman Ding Junhui impressed to finish top of the group with five wins from his six matches, but the youngster then lost 3-2 to Ali Carter, last season's Crucible finalist, in the semi-final play-offs.

Carter then lost 3-1 to Selby in the qualifying group final, which saw the Leicester professional progress to this season's Winner's Group, which will be played between March 25-26.
