Murphy bids for semi-final
FORMER Rotherham potter Shaun Murphy has made an encouraging start at the Wuzhuo International Jiangsu Classic in China.
The world No 3 and former world champion won two of his three group matches yesterday to put himself in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals.
A top break of 114 saw him beat Sheffield-based Chinese cueman Jin Long 2-0, while runs of 43 and 46 saw him beat Hong Kong's Marco Fu 2-0 without conceding a point.
But the 2005 Crucible champ lost 2-0 to Joe Perry in his final group match of the day after the Cambridgeshire ace pocketed breaks of 74 and 49.
Ding Junhui lost 2-1 to fellow Sheffield-based Chinese player Li Hang despite a break of 117, but then forced a 2-1 win over Irishman Mark Allen, a Crucible semi-finalist last season, thanks to breaks of 53, 40, 52 and 78.
The funeral of Steve Prest, Murphy's former coach who died last Friday, is on June 9 in Harrogate. Murphy was coached by Prest during his 2005 World Snooker Championship triumph in Sheffield.
