Judd comes up Trumps in Sheffield

SHEFFIELD-based snooker ace Judd Trump is Glasgow-bound having qualified for this season's new World Open.

The world No 27 clinched an emphatic 3-0 victory over Thailand cueman Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon in the final round of qualifying at Sheffield's World Snooker Academy yesterday.

Trump will now wait to see who faces in this year's first round with a live draw on Sunday September 19.

This season's second ranking event of the season runs from 18-26 September at the Scottish Exhibition Centre (SECC), so Trump knows he is likely to play his match on Monday 21st September.

"I played well, it was good to play like that because I didn't know what to expect from him because I've never played him before," reflected Trump.

"I never felt in any trouble because I had such a good start and I managed to put together some good breaks."

Trump, who conceded just 22 points in the entire match, opened proceedings with a fine 108 break and followed up that century with runs of 79 and 69 to triumph in just 41 minutes.

And the promising left-hander is looking forward to going back to Glasgow having reached the semi-finals of the 2008 Grand Prix at the SECC.

"I've got lots of fond memories of Glasgow, I beat Ronnie O'Sullivan there a couple of years ago to get into the semi-finals and then gave John Higgins (the eventual winner] a really good game in the semis.

"We're only playing best of five frame matches so it's exciting for everybody, I think everyone feels as if they can beat one another.

"I don't mind who I play in the first round, if I play well I back myself to beat anybody, especially over this shorter format."
