Ding scales world league table

SHEFFIELD-based Chinese cueman Ding Junhui has climbed to number five in next season's world rankings.

This season the 23-year-old won the UK Championship and also reached the final of the Glasgow Grand Prix and China Open respectively. Ding's charge for the World Championship title was ended prematurely last month after a surprise second round defeat.

But the youngster's form last season has now left him in a strong position to chase the coveted world No 1 spot next season. "I'm very happy with the way I've played this season, winning the UK Championship final was very special for me," said Ding. "Hopefully next season I can win a few more titles, I'm very happy with the way I've been playing."

There was also good news for fellow Sheffield-based Chinese cueman Liang Wenbo, who also lives in the city and practices at the EIS. Wenbo has risen to No 16 for the first time in his career - and his achievement also represents the first time two Chinese players have forced their way into the elite top 16 in the world rankings.

Proof enough that the Far East have now become a major player on the world circuit.

Former Rotherham potter Shaun Murphy has dropped four places to number seven in next season's standings, although he did win the SKY Premier League title last season. Unfortunately the tournament didn't hold ranking points.
