Adam improves as Cav takes win

ADAM Blythe moved into the top 10 of the overall standings in the Tour of Qatar after an excellent ride in yesterday’s third stage.

World champion Mark Cavendish picked up his first victory since moving to Team Sky on the 146.5 kilometres ride from Dukhan to Al Gharafa Stadium, but 22-year-old Blythe was in contention throughout until being boxed in on the final sprint.

Blythe, from Sheffield, who rides for American team BMC Racing, has also moved up to second in the young rider standings - just one second behind Germany’s Rudiger Selig.

Cavendish said it is an excellent start to his year: “It’s incredible to win (with the world champion’s rainbow jersey). I said I wanted to make the jersey proud.

“You never really get the season going until you get that first win under your belt. So now it’s there I can hopefully get on a roll now and we can win some things.”

Today’s stage sees Blythe and the rest of the peloton take on the 147.5km from Al Thakhira to Madinat Al Shamal with Belgian Tom Boonen still leading the race.
