Novak Djokovic registered his 40th straight win in emphatic fashion at the French Open yesterday.

World No 2 Djokovic, who is now only four short of John McEnroe’s record start to a season of 42 consecutive victories, thumped Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker 6-2 6-1 6-3.

Anne Keothavong’s bid to become the first British woman to win a first-round match at the French Open for 17 years ended in gallant failure after a more than three-hour battle with Russian Vesna Dolonts, losing 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-4.
