NICK Robinson-Baker jetted out to Dubai yesterday – but he isn’t going there for the sun, sea and sand, writes Ricky Charlesworth.
Instead, the City of Sheffield diver headed out for the first instalment of the FINA Diving World Series which takes place this weekend, as he continues preparations towards the Olympics. The four-legged series will see further meetings in Beijing, Moscow and Tijuana in the next month.
The 24-year old travels with partner Chris Mears as the two put the finishing touches towards their routine.
Despite a packed schedule already, Robinson-Baker will now squeeze in this latest trip after getting a last-minute call.
He said: “It was just a spur of the moment really. I only found out Tuesday that I’d be competing but it’s not an issue. I feel I’m in good shape and it’ll be great to get some competition under my belt.
“We’re up against some of the top teams in the world, like China and Russia so it will be great to see how we’re progressing.”
The duo most recently competed at the Olympic Aquatics centre, in a test event for the Games, in front of over 17,000 and Robinson-Baker cannot wait for the real spectacle in August: “The crowd was wild. We’re only four months away; I can’t wait for the main event.”
