Sheffield law student called up for Ireland netball squad

A law student from Sheffield who juggles her degree studies with competitive sport has been selected to play netball for Ireland.

Fran Duffy is celebrating making the national squad and is now preparing to travel to Singapore for the Nations Cup in early September.

The 20-year-old, of Bents Green, is appealing for sponsorship to help cover the cost. Including her return flight, the bill is expected to be between £800 and £1,000.

Fran said: “This is a fantastic opportunity and a real dream come true to play international netball. However, I have to fund myself completely for all competitions, training, kit and so on. Being a student, this is quite a challenge and a concern so I am seeking a sponsor who can help.”

Fran, whose father has Irish heritage, is studying law at Manchester Metropolitan University. She previously attended Mount Mary’s College, an independent Catholic senior school and sixth form at Spinkhill. Fran finished school after completing A levels in summer 2014.

It was at school that Fran’s skills on the netball court first shone out. Her former school coach Ruth Powell said: “Fran was an excellent player and was central to our team. It’s great to see her doing so well and we’ll be following the Irish team closely in the Nations Cup.”
