Keeping up appearances on holiday isle
"IF THEY'RE going there for their holidays we're going somewhere else!" Like workmates trying to out-do each other the Going-Up family of Sheffield 2 don't seem best pleased that the Mid-Tables of S6 might be gatecrashing their favourite holiday destination.
What's worse they want to meet up while they're there!
That's not what Going-Ups do, it's just not sophisticated.
It'd be like going to Skegness Butlins and finding your neighbours on the next table in the dining hall.
Of course the Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday in Malta scenario has far more, or less, to it than that.
Doesn't it?
Reports suggested that a revived Steel City Cup game could be played on the island in the summer in the build up to next season and although Wednesday seem quite keen, United condemn the idea as pure speculation and point out they have never been consulted.
FlyMalta sponsors Sheffield United's shirts and there's just a hint of 'we went there first' competitive edge to their response on the club website.
"We would not wish to jeopardise our excellent relationship built up between Sheffield United, the city of Sheffield and our sponsors the Malta Tourism Authority," it says in an article headlined "No Maltese derby game."
"Our Malta sponsorship has not only brought awareness of the island as a holiday destination but also to other football clubs of the first class facilities on the island.
"We are pleased that as a result Wednesday are thinking of going to the island."
Surely United aren't that keen because of the security implications of the idea rather than wanting Malta to be Sheffield United island and not a place for the other lot?
Football was put in its proper place this week with the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.
Petty football rivalries were rightly set aside in the interests of humanity and respect for the 96 who died in the tragedy.
But we were also reminded why football has such a hold on us all.
Chelsea 4 Liverpool 4 has to be one of the great games of all time.
Eight goals with so much at stake?
Fantastic, and as fine a tribute to the tragically absent Liverpudlians as a football match could be.
