In-form Ennis poised to take part in world class field
Athletics: Results and reports.
FOLLOWING her sparkling form over 60 metres hurdles over the last two weekends, Jessica Ennis competes again in the same event at the Aviva Grand Prix at Birmingham tomorrow.
Ennis equalled her personal best of 7.95 in both heats and final and the Birmingham event, given some tough opposition, will be the perfect opportunity to beat that.
World silver medallist Danielle Carruthers (USA), also with 7.95 this year, is perhaps the biggest threat to Ennis but she also has to contend with another top American Yvette Lewis as well as European Indoor Champion Carolin Nytra of Germany. It is one of the classiest events of the meeting.
The hurdles comes early in the programme, after which Millhouses-based Ennis competes in the long jump where Britain’s Shara Proctor heads the field with 6.68, just 2 centimetres short of the UK indoor record.
Ennis has recorded 6.19 this year but will be aiming to improve on that and get closer to her indoor best of 6.44 which she set two years ago during her World Indoor Pentathlon success in Doha.
Ennis will defend that title in Istanbul starting on March 9.
South Yorkshire road runners will be in action on Sunday in the popular Wombwell 5 mile race which starts at 10:00 am at Wombwell Recreation Ground.
