Video: Sheffield Steelers goalie fan clash

  • by Bob Westerdale Ice Hockey

Steelers overpowered skill team Dundee Stars last Wednesday to go through to the Challenge Cup semi final.

But this weekend’s league matches, at Braehead Clan tomorrow, and at home to Nottingham Panthers on Sunday, will be different, accepts John DeCaro, who was the shut out goalie in this week’s 7-0 win.

“When you have got teams like Dundee, built on finesse, you can come in and bully them” he said. “Half way through third period they shut down and didn’t play.

“But you can’t play like that against teams like Nottingham.

“If that happens against them we would be fighting all game. But you can do it against finesse teams like Dundee and Edinburgh.”

DeCaro said playing with the same degree of intensity exhibited on Wednesday “is hard to replicate every night.”

But he said: “The Dundee game was one of the best performances we’ve put on for a while, to dominate the team for 60 minutes was something we needed.”

Meanwhile DeCaro, who has been criticised by some Dundee fans after a confrontation with a teenage fan after last week’s first leg, is unlikely to face any repercussions.

A League spokesman said: “Any off-ice incident or request for supplementary discipline is the responsibility of the 10 Elite League clubs. The disciplinary committee has had no contact from Stars or Steelers following last week’s match.”

DeCaro is seen pushing the fan back - who earlier seems to be engaging with his team-mates.
