Steelers ticket money is gone
SHEFFIELD STEELERS owner Bob Phillips says all the season ticket money collected to finance the start of the forthcoming season has gone.
Recently, he revealed in The Star that "thousands of pounds" of fans' money had been mistakenly directed from Steelers' account into the operating company Yorkshire Sport (YS) - that cash going to the liquidator after YS went bust.
There are rumours that around 8,000 went to YS.
The Star estimates the season ticket fund would have been around 180,000. That leaves around 172,000 spent before the season begins under a new coach.
When The Star asked Phillips, yesterday, how much was left, he confirmed it had all gone. Asked what it had been spent on, he said it had been "used up going forward for the new season." Asked what will happen in September when the club needs revenue to keep operating, he replied: "That will be for me and Mariani (his wife) to find and put the money in."
Yesterday, we reported the proposed sale of the club had collapsed after a consortium offered only a percentage of the 200,000 asking price. The sale of Steelers seems complicated by the future of seven homes built by either Phillips or the club some years ago, six of which remain on the market.
Meanwhile,Phillips says new player coach Ben Simon HAS signed a contract, and his first job will be to see what players will be returning for the 2010-11 season. Phillips said: "I am not sure about (Jeff) Legue and (Joey) Talbot, whatever, it's down to the new coach to find out who is coming back, I haven't any idea, I hope most are going to come back. Simon is working now and will be over here in two weeks."
Steelers' Brits are more vulnerable than the imports. Foreign nationals can look elsewhere in the UK or abroad. But the market is not as easy for Brits. Clubs like Cardiff Devils, for example, would loved to have signed Jonathan Phillips months ago, but their roster is now full.
Harrogate networking firm, Linked2success is the new club sponsor.
