Steelers face up to 'Jody and Tait' dilemma

WHICH is Sheffield Steelers' most pressing problem - signing a goalie or re-signing leading point scorer Ashley Tait?

"It's a toss-up; they are both huge concerns for our club," admits captain Jonathan Phillips. "Filling Jody's shoes is a huge priority, but when you look at what Ash brings to the table, then that issue is equally important."

Phillips and those team-mates who have re-signed would like to hear positive news on both situations.

The Welsh forward has heard about the possibility of replacing Jody Lehman in goal with Trevor Koenig or Kevin Reiter and would be pleased with either option.

"They're both great goalies," he says. "Reiter was unreal last year when he played against us, while Koenig is a proven asset - he helped Newcastle win the Play-Offs (2005–06) almost on his own. But, I wouldn't want to see Ash on any other team than ours.

"He has scored some big goals for us over the last couple of years and for Coventry before that.

"He is a player who keeps carrying on and on, niggly, in your face and working hard at both ends of the rink.

"I think it's 50-50 whether he stays - I sure hope he does."

Phillips expects his old team in South Wales to be strong next season. "Cardiff are always good after Christmas and I think will challenge stronger next season. I can't see them higher than fourth place, though," he added.

"I hear Nottingham Pan thers are concentrating on bringing in firepower - if they do that we'll be laughing because in this league you need workhorses who are prepared to get their noses dirty. "
