Steelers are 'splashing the cash'
SHEFFIELD Steelers - whose operating company went bust in the Summer - are the second highest spenders on players in the league this season.
That's the claim of former Steelers' official and players' agent Dave Simms, who has contacts across the Elite division.
Simms, who wants his former team to do well despite walking out on owner Bob Phillips weeks ago, believes the acquisitions of two former NHL men in coach Ben Simon and winger Rob Globke illustrates the management's ambition and big-spending strategy.
"Knowing the salaries players command at this level, I'd be confident Sheffield are second only to Nottingham Panthers in spending.
"Steelers will be marginally ahead of Belfast and then comes Cardiff and Coventry." Simms believes the quality in the roster could bring the title back to Sheffield.
"Judging by the background of players like Simon and Globke, and (new winger) Derek Campbell, the coach is building a team that can win this league. Nottingham Panthers remind me of Manchester City; they have more money than the others, but can you honestly see them winning the title?"
n Steelers have taken the unusual step of making the first non-season ticket game very early in the season - it will be on Saturday Sept 11 against new club Dundee Stars. The club normally makes three games payable to season ticket holders. The decision to stage one so soon in the campaign, will help early season cash flow, although some fans claim they have not had much advance notice.
