Steelers head coach Gerad Adams has a shopping list for players he is looking at this summer and right at the top of that agenda is a star of a defenceman.
He wants a high quality, experienced leader.
Adams has already overseen the departure of several high profile players, including captain Steven Goertzen and top scorer Jeff Legue.
He isn’t afraid to re-shuffle the Steelers pack with his eyes on an assault at the league title next season.
The club still hasn’t yet made a decision on whether to offer either blue liner Chad Langlais or play-off hero Drew Fata new deals for next season. “Our blue line will be strong and deep,” said Adams.
“With the return of Rod Sarich, in addition to Duston Kohn, Gord Baldwin and Mark Thomas, we are strong already plus we have two more players to add to that group as well.
“Top of my list of players is a high quality offensive- minded right hand shot defenceman.
“A smooth skater, a player who can join the rush and add to the offensive punch of the team.
“That’s the way I am looking for the team to play next year.
“I’m looking for an experienced player, a leader.
“That position could take some time to fill but we have all summer so I am not rushing. We will use all resources available to us to find that right player and have agents and other club contacts on the look-out for us.
“We have our eyes on a few guys right now who haven’t made the decision whether to come to the UK or not yet.
“Our contacts in Europe and North America know what we are looking for.
“We are being choosy and want the best player our budget can afford.”
Adams also confirmed that he hadn’t finished with his British signings.
He expects to make two more additions to the team, including a young player on a two- way contract with an EPL side.
