Gerad Adams has confirmed the signing of 26 year old American forward Mike Forney.
The 6ft2ins left winger has been brought in to add firepower to the Steelers forward line after scoring well in Norway, Austria and North America
“Mike will bring us a mixture of youth and skill,” said head coach Gerad Adams. “His offensive upside is tremendous. He will bring us needed goals.
“As a player I think he will excite, he has great hands, good vision but most importantly an eye for goal.
“He has put up excellent numbers back home in the East Coast league and again in Europe (Austria and Norway).
“I think this is a player looking upwards towards bigger and better things. I’m expecting a big year from him.”
Selected in the third round of the 2006 NHL draft by the Atlanta Thrashers Forney completed his education at the University of North Dakota before turning professional in 2009 playing in North America in both the American and East Coast Hockey league.
Last season Forney moved to Europe playing 35 games for Villacher SV (Austria) and 10 in Sparta Sarpsborg (Norway).
One person who thinks Forney will be a hit with the Steelers is former winger Shawn Limpright.
“We took references off many people,” said Adams. “Shawn was one of those. He was one of many who told us we had the right man and a player who could contribute just what we were looking for.
“The signings we have made this week of Morency and Forney are important pieces in our Steelers jigsaw,” said Adams.
“We know our last three import forward need to have an offensive upside just like Forney has. I’m confident that more will follow of a similar ilk.”
