Sheffield Steelers held off a late avalanche of chances from Cardiff Devils to record a 4-2 win at the Arena tonight.
Steve Birnstill opened the scoring with his first home goal of the campaign.
And man of the match Jeff Legue added another on 32;27 and Matt Stephenson added another.
But Scott Matzka dragged one back and it was 3-2 when Smith scored again for the Welsh before a low-par crowd.
Thankfully Legue ended the contest with a 53rd minute strike.
*Leaders Belfast extended their winning run to four games in the Elite League tonight as they got the better of Hull 5-1.
They are five points clear of Nottingham as a result, while they are eight in front of Sheffield.
Elsewhere, Coventry thrashed Dundee 7-2 leaving the Scottish outfit in the bottom two, while Braehead beat Edinburgh 2-0.
