In a prelude to this weekend’s home double-header against Bracknell Bees, the team immediately below them in the league, Sheffield Steeldogs ran out 6-2 winners at Telford in midweek.
Kriss Grundmanis (MOM) and Janis Ozolins were the main points scorers with 2+2, followed by Andre Payette with 1+2 and Lloyd Gibson 1+0, while Ryan Johnson claimed 3 assists. Two fights, instigated by Tigers trying to spark their team into life, were won by Grundmanis and Payette.
The two games at iceSheffield this weekend, tomorrow (7.30pm) and Sunday (5.30pm) are must-win games in the battle for the last play-off position, a target that coach Payette is pinning his sights on.
Following Tuesday’s game, Payette said: “I am really proud of how the guys played and have adapted to my style of play so quickly. I will be working hard with them in the only practice session we have this week to improve our powerplay and other aspects of our game ready for our important weekend’.
The two games against Bracknell will certainly be entertaining and Steeldogs need to shut down the highly effective pairing of the Bees star players, Jaroslav Cesky and Michael Pinc, who have accumulated 50 goals and 85 assists between them this season. The Bees’ games should be high octane, physical matches.
