Form team Sheffield Steeldogs have now picked up 12 points out of an available 14.

Last weekend, they beat Peterborough Phantoms 2-0 (Saturday) and Slough Jets 4-2 at iceSheffield.

Player coach Andre Payette said: “The points haul is a tremendous achievement. Our last games couldn’t have been closer but the guys’ determination ensured we came out with wins. The defence have been superb, with Steve Duncombe and Lee Haywood exceptional, as has Ben Bowns with his shutout on Saturday and in only allowing two goals over the weekend.”

Steeldogs are now joint third in the EPL, tied on 38 points with Manchester and Slough, with Milton Keynes in second and top placed Guildford on 44 points.

Dogs opened Sunday’s account with an early goal by Andrew Hirst, a lead nullified at 13:23 as Mindaugas Kieras equalised for a 1-1 period.

Sheffield restored the lead at 17:26 by a super goal from Janis Ozolins, only for that also to disappear at 35:42 as Darius Plikauskas levelled.

Pavel Gomeniuk restored the lead for the final time at 48:14 and Ozolins outwitted the Slough defence during a 6 on 4 penalty kill to send the puck all the way down the rink into an empty net at 59.41.

On Saturday, a 33 shot shut out for Bowns delivered a 2-0 win against Peterborough. Many chances were created in the first period with shots hitting the pipework but finally, after pressure on Damian King, Greg Wood put Steeldogs ahead. Peterborough upped their pace and Bowns made some great saves. The talented netminder also denied a penalty shot at 46.19.

Dogs finally relieved the pressure when Lloyd Gibson scored at 57.07 though penalties threatened to ruin man of the match Bown’s first shutout of the season.
