Shock axeing alerts Steelers to goal ace
STEELERS may cash in on Cardiff Devils' decision to axe their top goalscorer, Mike Prpich.
Head coach Gerad Adams stunned the hockey world earlier this week when he showed Prpich the door.
Sheffield are closely monitoring the situation, given the fact that their own leading points-man Ashley Tait has not committed to a new season in South Yorkshire.
Prpich was Devils' leading marksman with 35 goals in 57 games last season. But there have been off-ice issues and Adams was unhappy with his "working relationship" with the 27-year-old left-shot Canadian.
General manager Mike O'Connor said: "Mike has been told he is not in Cardiff's plans and we are aware of that situation. Prpich is a fine player and it is a surprise what has happened."
Steelers are resigned to losing defenceman Steve Munn, said O'Connor.
"It pains me to say it, but we're having to move on without Munner. He is in high demand on the continent and in the States," he said.
"We are not in the running - we cannot compete with what he will get elsewhere."
Another spot opening up on the roster is that held last year by Andrew Sharp. Coach Dave Matsos always talked up Sharp's importance, based on his fighting skills and a hope his skating could be improved.
But O'Connor revealed: "I'd be very surprised if he came back, I don't think he will fit into the equation."
