Jason Hewitt believes that his Sheffield Steelers’ New Year side can go on to display some of the consistency that was the hallmark of their early-season.

Sheffield chalked up an eight-game winning streak at the beginning of the campaign.

Then after the end of October, they won just four out of nine. Things picked up with an excellent seven wins in eight sequence.

But Steelers’ four most recent games have been split.

So it is important that Sheffield, in third place, pick up some points this weekend in Belfast and thereafter.

Hewitt, who has a testimonial game at iceSheffield on January 26 after years of sterling service to the club, is confident the team can find a winning momentum.

“Every team goes through times of inconsistency; the trouble was we were flying at the beginning of the year and just kept trying to play that same aggressive way when things weren’t going our way and it cost us a bit.

“But we changed some things, looked at videos of our games, and I think we’re a better team for it now” said the former GB winger.

“We have a good group. We always try stay loose - not too high, not too low - so things are looking good as we move into the new year.”

The two Belfast games, this weekend, presents a stiff challenge for the team, the winger acknowledges.

“I don’t think they have too many weaknesses as a team, really.

“They are quite similar to us and have a good balance of skill and grit; they are usually great games between us.”

Cardiff Devils go into the weekend three points ahead of second-placed Belfast, but the chasing pack has games in hand.

Hewitt admires the Welsh team and said: “I think Cardiff have as good of a chance as any of us they’ve been at the top since near enough the start and that’s very hard to do, so I think they’ll be in the running come the end of March.”
