STEVE Goertzen’s Elite League debut was a painful affair.

The Sheffield Steelers forward’s right ankle took the full force of a team-mate’s slapshot as he tried to get a tip-in or obscure the Cardiff Devil goaltender’s view, from the edge of the crease.

“The ankle is tender, but OK” he says. “I’ve stopped a few of those before, but that’s where I’m supposed to be. It comes with the territory!” Goertzen, 28, will be in the same high-risk place when Steelers host Coventry Blaze on Saturday. “We wanted a win in our home building for the fans (last week,) we failed to do that and gave up a lot of odd man rushes. I don’t know whether it was nerves” said the 68-game former NHL skater.

“Guys are getting to know each other. Every day is about building; taking those stepping stones to where we want to be.”
