SHEFFIELD Steelers endured a Halloween hammering tonight,

They were beaten 3-0 in Belfast, despite winning 5-1 against the same team in the same rink, the night before.

Steelers held on for 25 minutes.

But Noah Clarke (05:01 2nd), Matt Towe (06:12 3rd and Sam Roberts (08:12 3rd) did the damage.

A shut-out defeat of this nature is bound to disturb coach Ryan Finnerty, despite Friday’s emphatic win.

Friday report:

JUST a matter of days before Halloween former Belfast Giants captain Colin Shields returned to haunt his old club as he netted a hat-trick in a 5-1 win for the Sheffield Steelers at the Odyssey Arena.

It’s first blood to the Steelers in the weekend double header as they opened up a three-point lead over the Giants at the top of the Elite League table with a convincing performance.

Three goals in the space of 10 minutes in the second period - two from Shields and one from Jonathan Phillips - had the Steelers on easy street against a lacklustre Giants side.

And one more from each player in the third period completed the win, with only a Darryl Lloyd effort in reply.

There was little by the way of excitement in a tight first period, but the follow-on from Tom Sestito’s fight with Giants’ Greg Stewart two weeks ago came when the Belfast man threw in a big hit against the boards. It was the Steelers tough guy who ended up in the penalty box though for roughing.

It was, however, an action packed second half to the second period in which Steelers took control of the game.

Phillips broke the deadlock at 29:08 when he picked up a pass from Tylor Michel on the right to send the puck under the body of Giants goaltender Stephen Murphy.

Just over three-and-a-half minutes later it was 2-0 as Shields capitalised on a error from Murphy to fire the puck into an empty net.

Shields then cracked home a superb third for the Steelers from a Shawn Limpright pass to make it 3-0 at 38:37.

The Giants threatened a rally when Lloyd got one back five minutes into the third period, but there was more to come from the Steelers.

Phillips hit the fourth at 51:06 and just over a minute later Shields completed his treble when he took Drew Fata’s hand tap and crashed the puck past Murphy and into the net.
