Sheffield Steelers preparing swoop for NHL ace
STEELERS are working on an ambitious swoop for a defenceman with 218 NHL games on his CV.
Sheffield have been courting 6ft 1in Canadian Scott Ferguson, who made his name over several seasons with Edmonton Oilers.
He is now 35-years-old, but his performances last year for German DEL team Ingolstadt ERC persuaded coach Dave Matsos to trigger off negotiations.
Ferguson, clearly, would not come on a low budget salary.
However, the attraction of coming to an English -speaking country after playing in Germany and Sweden is in the Elite League club's favour.
While talks have not led to Ferguson committing, Sheffield are hoping that by continuing a dialogue, they may get their man.
Ferguson, from Alberta, has been a pro for 18 years.
He is an ex-team mate of now retired Steelers Scott Allison and Frank Kovacs at Cape-Breton Oilers. He also iced with Dion Darling at Wheeling Thunderbirds.
With Steve Munn, Randy Dagenais, Mark Thomas re-signed, and Rod Sarich likely to follow, Matsos seems to be looking to replace Ian Manzano.
Meanwhile, The Star believes Sheffield have now brokered a deal with Jody Lehman to secure his fourth season as starting goalie backed by Dan Green.
