Sheffield Steelers will unveil their new coach tomorrow, and one of his first jobs will be to decide whether to retain veteran forward Jason Hewitt.
Hewitt has played 10 seasons for the club and has been guarnateed a testimonial next season – even though he hasn’t a contract for the new campaign.
“I think we all want Hewy to remain with us not just this this coming season but for a lot longer” said team captain Jonathan Phillips.
“Whoever the new coach is I am sure he will understand just how much he brings to the team.
“Hewy is old school, he does whatever is asked. He is vocal in the room and makes those around him accountable” said Phillips. “Last year I don’t think he played a game fully fit, he was injured most of the year and just played through the pain.
“Guys look at a player doing that and respect him for it. That’s leadership in my eyes and one of many reasons I love playing alongside him.
“Hopefully the new coach will decide his future quickly. To be honest I find a Steelers side without ‘the Bull Dog’ unimaginable.”
