Steve Goertzen could be Doug Christiansen’s choice as new captain of Sheffield Steelers next season.
Jonathan Phillips has skippered the team with distinction but Christiansen has already proved himself as a coach who favours a new-broom approach at the club.
If he decides to have a change in who wears the ‘C’, Goertzen, an outstanding, defensive-minded winger, must be a chief candidate.
Recently, Christansen told The Star: “Steve is a consummate professional, he does things at a higher level than most people in this league.
“When he plays against you, you notice how he cuts down the ice and makes it smaller for his opponent. He takes away shooting and passing lanes, time after time.
“He is also a big influence down low and in the corners. He is a pro’s pro - the type you can count on for leadership.”
Christiansen added of the Canadian: “He might not score the goals or tear down the ice at a million miles an hour but he always makes an impact on the game.”
