Sheffield Steelers comment: Goaltending is the main issue

A new forward is heading to Sheffield Steelers - but it’s goaltending that remains the number one issue at the club.

Regular import netminder Tyler Plante has missed the last seven games with a high ankle injury - one of the most challenging problems a goaltender can have as they need strength in that area particularly after making butterfly saves.

Plante won’t be back for the weekend. And the mid-table club will be acutely aware that if they bring him back to soon, he could re-injure himself.

Plante had a good start to his career but his form did come under scrutiny just before his injury.

Coach Paul Thompson had a few options to pick from in terms of a short-term replacement, finally plumping for ex Czech national side goaltender Marek Pinc. In my view, Pinc does not look a good fit for Steelers, he was hooked after conceding eight at Braehead Clan and is not an inspiring figure. T

he defence in front of him hasn’t been all that effective, either, in fairness.

That team-nervousness has spread like wildfire and a lack of confidence is dramatically undermining chances of retaining the League title.

Meanwhile, Mike Duco looks like he will head home to north America this week.

Braehead and Dundee Stars both had a look at the winger who was released from the club.

But Duco was in the top five earners at Sheffield - which put both teams off.

Steelers expect Canadian forward Guillaume Desbien to make his debut on Friday against Coventry.
