RYAN FINNERTY is still two players away from completing his 2012-3 roster - yet still feels it will be the most impressive Sheffield Steelers team in years.
Finnerty, who arrived in the UK as a Steeler in the 2007-8 campaign before his time at Cardiff Devils, has seen enough of Elite League teams to recognise the assets he will have for the coming campaign.
The vacancy for a new Sheffield forward should be filled later this week, while the remaining defenceman slot has been allocated, subject to details being tied up.
“If these two guys are confirmed I think this will be the biggest, fastest, grittiest Steelers team for many years” said Finnerty. “It will have balance and that was the biggest thing for me. A balance of goals with a strong, deep back end. I’m looking for a team with flair, speed and goals together with steel, grit and determination.”
Finnerty will take nothing for granted in terms of the remaining personnel yet to be signed.
A week ago, the opportunity to sign import Adam Huxley fell through at the eleventh hour.
“Now I think we are almost there” said Finnerty. “The deal for the forward is don; we’re awaiting transfer clearance.
“He’s a guy I didn’t think would be available. If he had have been I’d have gone after him as my number one summer target. The D man has proved to me more difficult, but I think we have our guy.”
