Two form teams went head-to-head on Sheffield Arena ice last night - but Sheffield romped to an unexpectedly wide-margin victory.
Defending champions Sheffield Steelers started the night with a 100 per cent win record over their last five games.
And their opponents, Belfast Giants, had been victorious in their last seven.
Giants were without suspended player coach Derrick Walser.
And the Irish looked leaderless in the opening spell with Sheffield taking a 2-0 lead.
Mathieu Roy put the home side ahead at 2;38 on the Power Play.
Then Jeff Legue nabbed his second of the season with a one-timer in front of the net - his 100th Arena goal.
Belfast were completely unravelled at 14;46 when Fredrick Vestberg knocked home number three.
The second period offered no respite: dman Ben O'Connor stroking home for 4-0 at 24;22.
And it was 5-0 at the half way point, with Roy getting his second of the night.
Giants took stock in the second break and came out more positive in outlook.
They got on the scoreboard, with Craig Peacock making it 5-1.
But an unlikely revival was put to bed when Colton Fretter scored a cracking individual effort at 57:31.
That spelled the end for a miserable night for the away side.
