SHEFFIELD Steelers had to put a bad week behind them tonight - but it was far from plain sailing.
Losses in their last two games to Nottingham Panthers and Dundee Stars had been hard to take.
And a League fine, to coach Finnerty for outspoken comments, wasn’t too good, either.
So a win tonight over Cardiff Devils at Sheffield Arena was essential.
And Jeff Legue put the home side ahead after 11 minutes.
But Steelers cocked it up on the Power Play when Mac Faulkner made it 1-1, shorthanded, at 15.46.
However Steelers Drew Fata capitalised on the powerplay to make it 2-1 at 18.02.
At 21;41 Josh Batch equalised for the visitors.
And the game seemed hung in the balance until two quick goals from Ashley Tait and Fata, again.
The gap looked reasonably safe until Phil Hill got one back for the Welsh at 53.21, Devils’ third.
Tylor Michel got what turned out to be a significant empty netter at 58:51.
Faulkner netted again on the powerplay at 59.46.
The points went to Steelers, though.
Final score: Steelers 5 - Devils 4
* Nottingham Panthers remain two points clear at the top of the Elite League following an 8-3 victory over Coventry Blaze.
The game was close until the end of the second period when the Panthers led 3-2 before they cut loose in the final period, scoring five times.
David Clark was their lead scorer with three.
Belfast Giants are breathing down their necks following a 5-0 win over Edinburgh Capitals.
The Giants effectively had the game wrapped up at the end of the first period which they reached with a 3-0 lead.
EPL res: Telford 4-6 Sheffield; B’Stoke 5-1 Peterborough; Slough 2-4 Swindon; Manchester 0-2 Bracknell; MKL 2-1 Guildford.
