Sheffield Steelers needed a good start tonight after last night’s 5-1 horror show at Hull Stingrays.

The side had been dreadfully slow starters on Saturday- they only competing in the last period.

So against Belfast Giants, the champions, they were looking for a good start to boost the confidence.

But it was the Irish who started on the front foot.

Colin Shields scored a sniper’s goal, which was equalised by Rob Dowd.

But Giants took the lead again when Robby Sandrock had time and space to thrash in a go-ahead goal.

Giants extended that lead from Shields after a mistake in the home defensive zone.

And while Drew Fata scored on the Power Play, Kevin Saurette scored a cracker for 2-4.

Steelers fortunes changed with a one-man show from Jeff Legue, scoring twice in five minutes of the last session.

The game went to penalties with Frank Doyle stopping all three shots, Chris Blight burying the winner.

SATURDAY REPORT

Sheffield Steelers’ recent good form ended in a major upset last night.

Steelers conceded five straight goals over the first two periods at Hull Stingrays.

They were 2-0 down in the first session, goals coming from Carl Lauzon and Jason Silverthorn.

If that was bad, worse was to come.

Player coach Sylvain Cloutier staked two in the middle period, sandwiching a power play effort from Jereme Tendler.

Twenty nine shots on Hull goal had failed to make an imprint on the scorecard, for Steelers.

New Sheffield coach Gerad Adams had been aware of Hull’s danger.

But it’s a fair bet that he hadn’t expected such a sizeable reverse.

With 45 seconds left, Robert Dowd scored from Stefan Meyer and Drew Fata.

Too little, too late, for a team hoping to make a Play Off statement.
