Ben O’Connor made his debut tonight for Sheffield Steelers -and had an immediate impact for the club in their Elite League win over Cardiff Devils.

The 25-year-old son of Steelers executive Mike is in between clubs at the moment but his temporary appearance in a Sheffield shirt brought an immediate reward.

The former Edinburgh Capitals and Coventry Blaze d-man, who left Arlan Kokshetau, based in Kokshetau, Kazakhstan earlier this week, assisted on both Steelers’ goals, converted by Colton Fretter and Michael Forney.

O’Connor has yet to tie down a contract in the east at this point.

But he can stay at Sheffield as long as he wants as far the Arena fans feel!

Devils won at the Arena in their previous appearance there this season, and had a few chances early on.

But they were 2-0 down at the first break after O’Connor inspired the home team.

The second period was a disappointing spectacle from a Sheffield perspective - Devils tying the game.

Joey Haddad sprang from the penalty box to score on a counter attack.

And at 33;59 Joey Martin levelled on the Power Play.

It left all to play for in the last session.

And Mathieu Roy gave Sheffield the advantage after hanging tough outside the crease.

3-2 became 3-3 though when Clarkson back-handed home.

With five and half minutes left Tyler Mosienko made it 4-3.

And an empty netter was awarded to Roy with 35 seconds left.

Afterwards Mike O’Connor said he was proud of his son - and happy with the points.

And Ben was beaming after receiving the man of the match award. “It was a fantastic experience” he said.
