Sheffield Steelers 5-2 Nottingham Panthers

Ryan Finnerty - Steelers coach

Ryan Finnerty - Steelers coach

SHEFFIELD STEELERS trimmed two points off Nottingham Panthers’ seven point lead over them, at the top of the Elite League, tonight,

Jeff Legue, two, and Ashley Tait were the home scorers in the first period, Brandon Benedict and David Clark replying.

Sheffield twice had a two goal lead.

It was then a war of attrition as Sheffield hung on grimly to the lead.

Scorer Scott Champagne only made the game safe with a minute left, and Steve Goertzen added an empty netter.

It was a slightly flattering scoreline, to say the least.

But you won’t hear Steelers fans complaining.

In tonight’s Steelers’ programme owner Tony Smith said that last Wednesday night’s quarter final win over Dundee Stars had been “commercially a do or die night.”

He said: “The commercial/finance side of the Steelers is certainly a challenging one.”

Full weekend round up in Monday’s Star.
