Third place Sheffield Steelers were losing to Belfast Giants in the battle of the also-rans tonight.

Simon Ferguson put Steelers ahead after three minutes, but Kevin Saurette equalised, before Steve Goertzen made it 2-1.

Ashley Tait also hit the post as Sheffield tried to end the League programme on a high - not an easy thing to do after rivals Nottingham Panthers had won the title.

Giants were determined to make their own statement though and former Sheffield player Matt Towe equalised.

That was followed by a penalty shot third for the Irish from Noah Clarke at 45;40.

On Saturday, against Hull Stingrays, The signs looked good when Jeff Legue profited from a Rod Sarich play to score after 47 seconds.

But Hull got two within seven minutes from Jereme Tendler and Matt Davies.

Thankfully, d-man Danny Meyers equalised and on-form forward Simon Ferguson gave Sheffield a 3-2 lead.

Shawn Limpright and Kurtis Dulle swapped goals in a bad-tempered middle session.
