Ben Arnt and Ryan O’Marra were on target as Coventry Blaze boosted their play-off hopes with a 2-1 win over Sheffield Steelers, who lost ground on leaders Braehead Clan.
Blaze were 2-0 up until Steelers’ Mathieu Roy got a PP goal back at 56;28.
But Coventry held on for the unexpected victory.
Leigh Salters scored twice and added an assist as Braehead extended their lead at the top of the Elite League table to three points with a 3-0 victory over Dundee Stars.
Stefan Meyer scored the other goal and Kyle Jones turned away 25 shots for his eighth shutout of the season.
Cardiff Devils took advantage of the Steelers’ slip-up to draw level with them on 58 points following a 3-2 win over Nottingham Panthers, who saw themselves drop seven points back of the Clan.
Joey Haddad, Chris Jones, and Matthew Myers all scored in the second period to give the Devils a comfortable lead and despite Robert Farmer and Brandon Benedict finding the net for the Panthers it wasn’t enough.
At the other end of the table, Edinburgh Capitals gave their own play-off hopes a massive boost as Daniel Naslund and Rene Jarolin both scored twice in a 6-4 win over Belfast Giants.
Hull Stingrays got dragged back into the fight for the last play-off spot, going down 5-0 to Fife Flyers and now sit just one point clear of Edinburgh in the final play-off spot.
