Steve Goertzen made his debut tonight running the bench at Sheffield Arena for Steelers but it was a sombre experience as they dipped to Nottingham.

The stand-in player coach is still feeling the effects of concussion.

But he took charge, along with Neil Abel, for the League game with Panthers.

Sheffield have lost their last three to Nottingham, including the Challenge Cup semi final dates.

So tonight, there was a matter of pride as well as League and Play Off placings to play for.

It was an exciting, even first period, in which Tim Spencer’s point shot hit Rob Dowd’s stick and went in for 1-0 at 10;19.

Panthers had their fair of chances and levelled after killing a penalty at 16;18, the goal from Lynn Loyns.

Jason Hewitt and Robert Farmer fought near the Steelers’ bench.

Panthers commanded most of the second session, and deserved to go ahead, on 22;02, a fine wrap-around from Leigh Salters.

Steelers showed no shortage of effort but at times were like headless chickens.

A big last period was needed.

But Steelers never looked like equalising.

And when they hooked goalie Frank Doyle, Farmer backhanded the insurance goal.

A second period blitz ensured Sheffield Steelers achieved victory at Braehead Clan tonight.

Steelers had planted six goals past Cardiff in the middle session last time out.

And last night they went to town again, with a 3-0 second period victory.

Overall, Rob Dowd and Chris Blight both claimed two each, with Jeff Legue and Gord Baldwin staking the singles.
