Steeldogs play the League’s biggest spenders tonight - and will lop a pound off the ticket price for fans wearing Sheffield hockey jerseys.
With Steelers in Scotland, Dogs are offering a cut-rate to city ice fans as they play table-topping Telford Tigers (7.30pm.)
“We had a big crowd last week; they were our sixth man and we want the same this week” says coach Andre Payette. “Anyone wearing a Steeldogs or Steelers jersey will get a pound off.”
Dogs were hammered 11-1 at Guildford on Wednesday - arriving at the rink just half an hour before face off. “Our guys have to work so we were late and everything that could go wrong did” said Payette. “But we now focus on Telford. They must have double our budget and I bet Jonathan Weaver earns more money that all our defence put together. They invested in Elite League players like Jason Silverthorn, Martin Ondrej, Sam Zajac and Max Birbraer. But we plan on making their night as uncomfortable as possible.”
Fifth-placed Steeldogs will play British only skaters against Billingham in a Crossover Challenge Cup home game on Sunday (5.30pm.)
Meanwhile, Steelers started their double-header in Scotland at Edinburgh Capitals tonight - a team on an 11-match losing streak. The Edinburgh News reported: “The Capitals management’s experiment of combining players moulded around a physical dump-and-chase style, favoured by the majority of teams in the UK and North America, with the puck-possession tactics of player-coach Richard Hartmann, seems to be backfiring spectacularly.”
