Sheffield bids to stage Euro tournament

SHEFFIELD sends a delegation to Hungary today hoping to bring back a prestige European ice hockey tournament.

Steelers owner Bob Phillips, general manager Mike O'Connor and Alan Lyons from the Creative Sheffield development company will spend the weekend lobbying to host the second round of the Continental Cup on October 23,24 and 25.

O'Connor said: "We needed someone to explain the image and brand of Sheffield and Creative Sheffield are experts at this so it's great they are helping us.

"We'll be seeking to show what our city has to offer, not just in ice hockey and stadia terms, but in accommodation, general facilities and attractions and transport provision."

Steelers also feel they will have a better chance of progressing in the tournament if they are at home against teams from countries like Italy, Poland and Norway.

There is an obvious financial spin-off from the tournament too.

Meanwhile, Steelers have a third goaltender in their sights as they seek to replace Jody Lehman.

First choice candidate Trevor Koeing is now rated as "highly unlikely" to join, even though Sheffield have met his salary and off-the-ice conditions.

Ex-Basingstoke man Kevin Reiter remains a strong contender after fruitful talks with coach Dave Matsos.

But the club has also been discussing terms with a North American who played in Italy last season.
